Shaw Arboretum name change

Hail: All colleagues, prairie and native plant enthusiasts familiar
with my work and contributions to these lists, etc.:

The following message from the director of the Missouri Botanical
Garden regarding the part of the institution at which I work should
be of interest.

To: Members of the Garden staff

From: Peter H. Raven

I am very pleased to tell you that the Board of Trustees today
voted to change the name of the Arboretum to the Shaw Nature
Reserve, approving the recommendation of the Arboretum
Committee.

The recommendation was based on an extensive study of the
Arboretum’s recognition in the region and the acceptance of
suggested names more reflective of the nearly 2,500 acres of land
in Gray Summit that the Garden has operated since 1925. John
Behrer and his staff, and the staff of the Education Division working
there have done a wonderful job of creating a national model for re-
establishing natural communities and preserving biodiversity. An
arboretum, as many of you know, is an arranged planting of trees
and shrubs for educational and scientific purposes. Ours is not.
Hence, from this time forward, it is the Shaw Nature Reserve.
