more comments on national organizing

There's a lot in Ms. Cindy Hildebrand's comments to digest.

"A formal or informal prairie coalition of existing organizations might be
more feasible, if some person or persons had the time/energy to do the work
of putting one together."

I wonder which ones are represented on this listserve? Will everyone who is
a member of a prairie-related organization(s) please respond by telling us
all what you are members of? I'll compile the results, and we can see what
we've got to start with.

I'll begin: I'm a member of the Native Prairies Association of Texas, and
FYI National Audubon and Sierra Club. I think there are members of the
Native Plant Society of Texas on this listserve.

Working with existing conservation organizations to make them more aware of
prairie issues could be very helpful.

True. We could solicit knowledgeable members of a loose coalition of
prairie organizations to do one-page fact sheets to sent to the bigger
organizations working on issues that touch prairies; for ex., Ms.
Hildebrand's example of the aggressive western cultivars in upper Midwest
prairie plantings. It would be easier to do if members of the various
prairie groups were members of our listserve!

it would probably be helpful to make sure that federal agencies receive more
prairie-oriented comments on specific issues that directly impact prairies
but don't get much press.

If we solicit representatives from the various grassroots prairie groups to
sign up for this listserve, announcements such as "the Programmatic
Environmental Impact Statement for the Conservation Reserve Program, for
which comments were solicited nationally" could be made on this listserve
and then forwarded from here to other listserves of "potential
prairie-oriented organizations, such as state native plant societies,
Audubon chapters, etc.."

As Ms. Hildebrand says, "there is definitely useful political work to be
done on behalf of prairies."

Here's a list of prairie-related organizations that I know of and the
contact person I know of. Corrections? Additions? Email addresses?
Perhaps Camilla Lefevre who put out "The Prairie Reader" could share
contacts? I'm copying this email to the only email address I have for her.
It may not be good anymore.

"The Stockman Grass Farmer" a newsletter/magazine? Sally Imgrund, PO Box
3516, Meridian, MS 39303 sgfmarketing@prodigy.net They aren't a prairie
group, but they were interested enough to ask to get complimentary copies of
our Texas newsletter.
The Prairie Enthusiasts, Gary Eldred and Cindy Hildebrand I've got an
address only, no email address.
Missouri Prairie Foundation. I've got an address only, no email address.
Wachiska Audubon Society, Lincoln, NE. I've a phone number but no email
address or specific contact person.
Heard Museum, McKinney, TX Ken Steigman.

I know there are many others, such as nature centers, native plant
societies, etc. Can anyone help name some more? Let's make a list of them
and contact people. I'll compose an email to send to them inviting them to
participate in a loose national prairie coalition, and post I'll post the
draft of it here for comments first. Sound OK?

Lee Stone
Bastrop, TX
