FUNDING FOR PRAIRIE RESEARCH
offered by Prairie Biotic Research, Inc.
We Are Prairie Biotic Research, Inc. is a Wisconsin nonprofit established in 2000 to foster biotic research in prairies. One of the ways we do this is through a Small Grants Program that funds grants up to $1000 for the study of any grassland taxon in the USA. We are especially eager to support independent researchers (individuals lacking institutional support), but anyone may apply. Since 2002, we've awarded 22 grants worth over $20,000 to researchers in nine states to study insects, plants, mammals, reptiles and spiders. Many of these grants supported graduate student research.
In 2006, we expect to fund seven or more grants of up to $1,000 each, including geographically restricted funds for research in Wisconsin and Iowa.
To Apply for a Grant To apply for a grant, contact Michael Anderson at Prairie Biotic Research, Inc., PO Box 5424, Madison, WI 53705, or by email at pbr-grants@tds.net for a 2006 Grant Application Form. Proposals must be received by January 13, 2006.
Our Supporters We've received gifts in support of the 2006 Small Grants Program from:
J. & S. Baylor; BioLogic Environmental Consulting, LLC; Bison Belly Futures; Russell J. Blattner Charitable Trust; C. Brabant; K. Christoffel; R. Christoffel; R. & N. Dott; T. Felden; P. Kellogg; M. To Become A Supporter Please make a donation to support PBR and our Small Grants Program. Any amount is welcome. PBR is run entirely by volunteers and we maintain no offices so our overhead is very low. You may specify that your entire tax-deductible donation be given to researchers through our Small Grants Program. You may also specify: a geographical region in which the research is to be done; research in one of three taxa (plants, invertebrates or vertebrates); graduate student research; or our endowment fund to support our Small Grants Program.
THANK YOU,
from the Board and Scientific Advisors of Prairie Biotic Research, Inc.,

I've lost my copy of an email on the listserve from a month or two ago
announcing small prairie grants for research. Does anyone still have that
information? The email included below seems a good candidate if the
deadline hasn't passed.

Subject: Inquiry on grants and scholarships for prairie ecology research
Dear Native Prairie Association of Texas:
I am a PhD student at Texas Tech University where I am researching aerial
survey techniques to detect new prairie grouse leks and to count leks. My
focus is on the lesser prairie-chicken in the southern plains of Texas, but
the research is equally applicable to other prairie grouse, also in need of
accurate population numbers.
I am writing to ask if you grant research monies to individual researchers
such as myself. Although I have the costs of my research funded for air
time, I am in need of funds to cover my expenses while I attend a vertebrate
sampling class at Colorado State University for 10 weeks this spring 2006.
The monies I am needing relate to expenses to travel (drive) round-trip
between Lubbock, TX and Ft. Collins, CO and to cover my rent and utility
expenses while in Colorado (I also have to pay my rent and utilities in
Lubbock while in Colorado). Total costs amount to approximately $1200. My
tuition is covered by a scholarship by the USDA NRCS in Wyoming.
Please reply indicating whether you would consider funding my expenses in
whole or in part or if there are other prairie research granting agencies to
whom I might apply.
Thank you very much for your reply to my inquiry. Have a very peaceful and
grateful Thanksgiving holiday.
With best regards,
Hope Woodward
