Prairie seed For Sale

Those of you who have prairie seed to sell, consider the following:

Where was the origin of the seed? Are you trying to sell seed from
Connecticut or Indiana to anyone who will buy it or do you want it to be
planted near its origin. The issue of local ecotypes is a very important
one and needs to be considered since moving seed many miles from its source
into a different climate regime is not good for the seed or the future of
natural areas in general. A dramatic move north or south may put its
flowering period out of sequence with pollinators. Going to a much wetter
climate, will likely put it at risk for fungal diseases which it is not
adapted to. Drought resistance could be a problem for species which are
moved from east to west into areas of low rainfall.

Ponder these things when you market your seed.
