Burn baby, burn?

A neighbor and I have about 14 acres altogether in south-central Wisconsin
sand country planted November, 1999 to 40-odd species of grasses and forbs.
We had trouble keeping to a mowing schedule this past summer. My field this
fall is a sea of dead crabgrass. Below the thatch, scattered among what's
left of the summer's campion flowers, are basal rosettes of black-eyed
susans and a few other non-weedy looking species I hope belong on a prairie.

I want to try burning off the choking mat of crabgrass; my neighbor says the
fire will harm the baby prairie-plant roots.

Who's right? If I burn, should I do it this fall or next spring?
