I think it's too early to burn your planting (as tempting as it might be).
Using a pre-emergent herbicide isn't a bad idea, but I'd be leery of using
it this soon after planting. You risk killing off the prairie stuff you
planted that didn't germinate the first growing season. Some species, the
umbelliferea family in particular (rattlesnake master, angelica, golden
alexander to name a few), often don't germinate until after the 2nd or 3rd
growing seasons. I really think your best strategy is to mow next year,
wait it out and burn in 2002.
