Re: Frost seeding

"I'm not sure we have enough data to say the plantings will end up
looking them same no matter when they're put in. The more I learn
about prairies, I find no two look just the same, and in many cases
the differences seem to be attributable to the site history. I think
we may find this to be true of plantings in the future, as well."

Several years ago at the Society for Ecological Restoration conference, I
heard a presentation by Jeb Barzen from the International Crane Foundation
in Baraboo, Wisconsin. They were restoring prairie sites on their property.
In three consecutive years, they planted the exact same seed mix on the
exact same soil type at the exact same time of year. Due to weather
patterns alone which affected initial establishment, the three subsequent
prairies (which were side by side) were substantially different. To me,
this indicates that we could almost be certain that we will never get
plantings that look the same.
