Re: Increase in Seed Prices (OUCH!)

The increase in seed prices is the result of the federal government
allowing farmers throughout the midwest to interseed CRP land with
prairie species. It makes no difference where the seed comes from, as
long as it is a prairie species. This brought the demand for seed to
rise more than one thousand fold. I would guess seed prices could drop
in two to three more years, though I am told by prairie seed growers
that "it ain't gonn'a happen." We should all get in the business.

For those of you that have the ability to fall burn (after a hard frost)
your feilds, pastures or yards, try interseeding with native species
after you burn. Your reconstructed prairies will be somewhat slower to
appear, but this method requires less than half the amount of seed you
would normally use. For smaller areas, you can increase the germination
rate/ratio by mulching with finely chipped clean straw (1/4 inch
depth). Good luck and let me know how it turns out.
