At Cedar Hill State Park we have several remnant prairies, ranging from
four to twenty acres. One of the hazards we face when guiding visitors
is that when we stop to talk or examine the flowers, frequently someone
will be standing on a fire ant mound. Prescribed burns also reveal
large numbers of mounds. I do not know if larger acreages would be more
resistant. They have not exterminated the native ants or ground nesting
animals but undoubtably have a negative effect on the population. We
have observed them killing tree nesting species of birds before they can
fledge.
