Re: Texas Prairie web site
We had a problem, of sorts, but we also graze
at high densities - up to 8 head per acre. All
the hoof impact really damages the nests and
they have gone away over time. We have lots
of crickets and grasshoppers plus
other insects. Dove nest on the ground and
we have lots of rodents, too. We even have
dung beetles. We also have wood ants, harvester ants,
and the little black ants. This summer, the
".50 caliber" ants - flightless ground wasps showed
up as well.
I know of native remnants that have been
treated with Logic, a growth inhibitor,
which seemed to work.
In my mind, the ants can only move in if
there is something missing. Its really
hard to get established unless your
niche is vacant.
