In this area, big bluestem typically begins flowering about 3 weeks
before Indian grass, and continues flowering on some plants as long
as Indian grass does.
It is common, almost typical, especially for very tall and / or
isolated individuals of big bluestem, to fall over in late summer /
early fall wet weather, and not be able to get up.
