Re: Manure Amounts

Thanks  Robert, Greg and Casey for the quick response.

Greg, I used a one third manure two thirds compost mixture with no natural soil last year on my Prizewinner pumpkins and grew three plants in a 50 Square foot raised bed and they produced my best ever yield, 12 pumpkins between 75 and 225 pounds. I would have had even more pumpkins but because I grow on a hill I can only build so many platforms to keep the pumpkins from rolling down the hill, I had to cull so many.  That's a pretty small area for three plants but all the manure and compost I used gave me my best ever yield. With the improved watering system I plan on using for this year I think the average pumpkin size will increase.  I built this raised bed 30 days ahead of planting last year, I think the manure and the compost I use is so broken down in the bags that it is not too green to use within 30 days of planting.  I had two AG's over two hundred pounds last year grown in a less rich mixture and with store bought seeds but with the same water problems, this year with my new water system and great seeds that I received from members on this list, I'm hoping to break the 300 pound mark.  Casey,  I wish I could extend my beds to the 15' x 15' you recommend, however I have already maxed my space.  I agree with you that pumpkins are heavy feeders and they should do well in the conditions described above.  Thanks again everyone for your comments.
