It helps because it won't shock them like cold water can. Also it will not 
cool the soil temperature like cold water can.
Yes the water will cool off, but it will not deplete any heat from the soil. 
If it is a little higher than the soil temperature, it would actually add a 
bit of heat energy to the soil. Also once heat is in, mulch can help 
insulate from heat loss due to radiation and evaporation.
