Re: leafless, buried vines??

Beth,
There have been many theories floating around over the years, about how
far a leaf can export photosynthate. I don't know the answer. It is safe to
assume that the leaves closest to the sink (pumpkin) are the most important.
I think it is also safe to assume that leaves that are on remote branches 20
or 30 feet from the pumpkin probably do little for the pumpkin, however,
those remote leaves may do some good for the main root system. A foliar spray
of a dye or tracer might answer some questions. If you have a 100% leaf
canopy, more vines crawling all over the plant like a jungle probably do
little good. With severe pruning of leaves, there would have to be a point
where the lack of leaves (food makers) would limit the pumpkins growth.
