RE: pumpkin sites

Wade, I don't have any problem with the S.E. Minn. growers feeling that
they should have a GPC site in that area. When you look at what has
evolved over the last decade in the GPC regarding sites in the Midwest,
you people have a legitmate right to a site. Whether it would be in
your interest to pay $500 is questionable and whether it is fair to the
other sites is also debatable, but I am confused by your statement about
the Pacific N.W. growers in which you say that "we should take lessons
from them." You also say that "growing is a hobby and that it should be
for fun and friendships, not personal gain." Who is the we? Speaking
for myself and indirectly for my brother who now runs the Anamosa
weigh-off, we have never profited in any way from this sport. I know
that for the 7 years that I organized the Anamosa event, I spent way too
much of my own money and it was always for the "fun and friendships"
that you decribe. I've never sold a seed either or written a book or
helped write a book for a cut of the profits. Not everyone (even in the
Pacific N.W.) can say that. Also, many weigh-offs are organized around
a business in which they hope to profit from the publicity and crowds
that a pumpkin weigh-off brings. The reality of the sport is that
there is money and power or personal gain (whatever you want to call it)
and sometimes it takes several years for newcomers to the sport to see
it. Some never do and that's good. Unfortunately, Wade, that's just
the way it is and nothing against the Pacific N.W. growers, but I don't
see any lessons to be learned.
