weigh-off, sites, GPC/WPC/Indy
Hello Growers,
I was perusing my backlog of emails and noticed the discussion on
weigh-off sites. This was a hot topic at our winter meeting. South Dakota
has been a GPC site for 3 years, and the organization has helped our site
grow and get local recognition. However, the state is large (land not
people) and for the year 2000 we will not be affiliated with the GPC.
Instead we are expanding our weigh-offs to three independent sites
throughout the state on three different days. Date restrictions is the major
factor for the change. We will continue to strictly follow the GPC rules as
a bias for each contest. The pumpkin weigh off will be the feature point of
three town festivals. One town, Webster, SD., has gone as far as creating a
week long "Pumpkin" festival with numerous contests, a parade, street dance,
etc. climaxing with the giant pumpkin (& squash-sorry Glenn) weigh off. They
have enlisted marketing experts, and will have it published and promoted as
a tourist attraction. Furthermore, they will receive national press/media
coverage. This would be a perfect site to have a GPC affiliation yet, the
date restrictions (first Sat. of Oct.) unfortunately do not coincide with
the festival date (the second Sat. of Oct.) I'm not familiar with the WPC
but if the dates work out, the SDGPGA would be glad to associate with that
organization.
I guess my point is, if you grow em' it really should not matter what
"brand" of site you weigh them at-just make sure you weigh em'-but most of
all have fun!
Trying to Keep up with the Jones in SD,
Buck Meier
