Re: FEW SEEDS IN PUMPKINS

Yo All,
Just read an article in a booklet about seeds in fruit. One of the
main reasons that the fruit has not produced good seed besides poor
pollination is down to lack of phosphate in the ground. Plants need
phosphate (K) for roots and cell building. Trees need less K when thet have
grown as they only need it in fresh (that years) growth so can use what they
already have. Annuals which are new growth all year need a lot more. They
therefore need a lot more K . If there is not enough then the fruit itself
will be week and seed tends to be sterile and not form (fill out). Now we
all know how fast a pumpkin vine can grow so my guess is that we need more K
when setting fruit. Also when the fruit is growing, K is needed to keep the
cell building strong and healthy. Maybe the lack of K is one reason for
fruit splitting.
When I grew my personal best I used 11-0-33 after fruit set.
This fruit never had a lot of good seed.Maybe if I had used 11-22-33 instead
the seed may all have formed.I dont know, just my few cents worth. Any
comments welcome. What you think Larry?

   ALUN
