What I do and I think would work great for you is to start the seeds
inside in 4" peat pots. I put them in a 85 degree gas oven. I just turn
the pilot light up a bit and it keeps the oven at 85 degrees. i make sure
my wife knows that the seeds are in the oven and take the control knob off
to avoid a heat wave.
When the seeds start to break the ground I plant them outside in their
sites for the year. I have never had to harden off plants and I have never
had leggy plants. this is just an idea but it is what works well for me.
