First of all, I like the idea and would like to participate.
But, not to be a pain or anything... but I'm thinking of this
in terms of my "design of experiments" background. How about
something along these lines:
1. Select 50 growers.
2. Each grower gets a set of 3 seeds, from 3 different pumpkins.
3. Each grower tries to grow a big pumpkin
on each plant from the 3 seeds, and tries to
TREAT them each the same.
4. Compile all the results. If one seed stock does better
than another, then we might be on to something.
Now I realize, this sort of project would only be workable with
growers that have a lot of space, and a lot of patience to put
up with the experiment. It may be too much, just a thought.
These ideas I've briefly described still need some work.
I just wanted to put this out there for people to chew on.
And, the 50 people/single seed idea is still quite valid. It might
tell us something about various regions of the country, or maybe
about the variability of seed within a single pumpkin.
Hmmm... yes, the variability of seed within a single pumpkin is
a big deal, worth looking into.
