Re: Need a little advice

Hi Kevin:  You had better listen to a more experienced grower on the calcium issue but I am sure a soil test of any type would be beneficial.  As far as when to start mine are germinating as we speak here in Pa.  I think the Holland videos and books support that now is the time to get going.  If you can have them in the ground by the first week in May with enclosures built if needed you are ahead of the game.  Good Luck.  Ned

Subject: Need a little advice

  List
A lot of attention has been spent fine tuning our soils and I am about to do
my last tilling so I need a little advice. There has been allot of talk about
using large amounts of calcium on our patches. I even think that I remember a
gentleman stressing calcium in one of George Websters videos (I will have to
watch it to double check). Well, here is the question. If too much calcium is
applied to the soil what is the down side i.e. lack of other essential
elements being absorbed. I added a 50 LB sack of Gypsum into my large 5 ft x
5 ft x 5 ft composter as it cooked and I have added about 25 lbs to the
surface and tilled it in (garden is 1250 sq. ft). I have 75 lbs left and am a
little weary to use any more.
NO I DIDN'T HAVE A SOIL TEST SHAME ON ME. So the help you can give me will
be much appreciated as I had to decide whether to have a soil test and have
no cash left over to buy amendments or to buy a bunch of amendments and hope
for the best.
I also am noticing that other caliph growers are starting there plants
for the same weigh off that I will be attending and I don't plan on starting
until May 15 am I missing something. I am talking about Half Moon Bay and I
don't want to come up short wishing that I could have had another week of
growth...can anyone lend me any suggestions...
Thank you in advance for your reply..
