Now that the season has started in North America it
is time to think about record keeping. For those of you new to this list/pumpkin
growing Paul and I want to remind you that this list has resources other
than those provided by Duncan's classic mail list. We try to complement
Duncan, as does www.BigPumpkins.com with
their Grower's Diary.
For example, go our files section: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GiantPumpkins/files/ and
you can download George Brooks' excellent Excel spreadsheet for tracking your
progress. There also exists an excellent modification of George's
sheet by Gordon Tanner that converts OTT to weights that has
disappeared for reasons unknown. Perhaps Gordon will post his
sheet to the files section.
BTW, if any of you have pictures of your seed
starting setup and/or seedlings please post them, again in the files
section. This is a time that the newbies need the most help so share,
share, share.
On a personal note, my Bobier 1025 UOW and Hester
807.5 are the leaders of the pack. Both were up in less than a week and both
are starting to set their first true leaves today. I plan to post a picture
of these beauties later today.
Lastly, I have to vote that Waterman's seeds have
been as good as any I have grown. My 819 EXH both were grown and polinated from
seeds from Ray. Remember "as good as any" also means I don't expect 100%
germination.

PS - The answer to my question of some days ago as
to "What was the weight of the Francis Kohn, Jr pumpkin that caused Ray Waterman
to start the 'Collins Pumpkin Festival'?" is that it
weighed......................(drum role)......................109
lbs.
The 1982 winner tipped the scales at...........251
pounds. In 1983 the big Festival question was "Will the 500 pound barrier
finally be broken?"
BOY have we come a long way!!!!!!!
