Mathew,

Doesn't really matter how you plant them, you can train them to go in the
direction you want them to goJust use bamboo stakes and push them about a
half an inch a day. I did this two years ago and trained my 180 degrees in
about 7 days. So don't sweat it. Hope this helps.
