RE: NEW South African grower

Growing giants is a year-round project. Now would be a very good time to
start working on your soil adding the amendments that may take a while to
work (slow release fertilizers, manure, compost, etc.) Depending on where
you live, setting up some protection from animals (wild or domestic) is
another project for the off season.

Hope we hear of a big one from South Africa about this time next year! Good
luck.

Subject:	NEW South African grower

Hi, my name is Piet Coetzee and I'm new on the list. I'm from Stellenbosch,
South Africa and in the process of preparing for this year's growing
seasons. This would be my second time growing these giants. Since I'm quite
a novice in this sport I would like to get hold of some info as a guideline.

I heard about a book called:

'How-to-Grow World Class Giant Pumpkins II: Sequel to the Classic Book on
Growing Giant Pumpkins by Don Langevin'

Is this generally a good book to buy to get you started and to use as a
guideline?

Our growing season starts towards the end of the year (October). Should one
start preparing the planting spot and surroundings as early as 6 months
beforehand? What should one do? - Or must I wait till a month before
planting and start preparing the soil with well-decomposed manure and
compost?

Regards

Piet Coetzee
