RE: hoop house
I use 1/2" PVC electrical conduit. It is cheaper than regular PVC and it is
sunlight resistant (UV stabilized). You can use the large paper binder
clips to hold on your plastic to the 1/2" pipe. The clips don't work as
well on the 3/4" pipe.
I use all 4' long pieces, so the whole thing is modular. I can make any
size greenhouse I want. The scraps are about 2' long and all have bell ends
(due to being electrical conduit), so I can connect them or cut them to make
any length pipe I need to modify the structure. (And they are fun to play
with!) You could also use these as stakes.
I would suggest pre-stressing (bending) the arched pieces; the joints are
where I had problems due to too much stress. I use only tees and crosses
for connections. I use the tees around the edges, then crosses in the
middle. On my 16x16 house, I used 40 4' pieces of PVC, 9 crosses and 16
tees. I turn the corner tees so I can place the end over a piece of rebar.
This way all four corners are staked. I then use rebar (or other stakes) at
each hoop, outside the structure, so the bottom does not kick out. I have
enough parts to make another 16x16 hoop house. Or several smaller ones
(thanks to the modular design).
As for the plastic, I used Sun-Saver 6 mil, UV protected polyfilm greenhouse
plastic. It is guaranteed for a 4 year life. I paid $.10 per square foot
from EnviroCept (out of Washington State). John Maston found it cheaper
than I did and they were more reliable for shipping it. I think he paid
less than 8 cents per square foot.
If anyone wants more info, please feel free to e-mail me privately.
