1992 AGs
Fellow Growers-we all have seen the 2002 lists of top AGs,I have one showing
35 official pumpkins over 1000 pounds.
Just 10 years ago weights were much different and it is interesting to look
back and appreciate just how far this AG hobby and gene pool has advanced.
1992 was the first year I started using top 10 site averages to identify the
major sites and I still think it is a good rating to look at.The attached
list shows the major sites,and with one AG from HMB,I have listed the 30 top
official pumpkins.
At least I believe this list shows the top 30 for 1992 but the file doesn't
state that and I don't remember that part exactly.
This was the year that Joel Holland burst on the scene with a new world
record at 827 pounds,that beat the # 2 AG by 105 pounds,but that was his
too. I don't think such an amazing accomplishment of # 1 and # 2 in the
world by the same grower has ever happened before or since.
The attached list prints on one page and for the interested it could raise a
number of questions,such as:
1.How many of the 1992 top 30 growers grew an official pumpkin in 2003.Do
you know any of the other,now non-growers?
2.Which states and provinces were the leaders back then? (see bottom of
file)
3.Which states and provinces are now major regions but were not then?Can you
find RI,NH,PA,OH,BC,NB on the list?
4.Of the 7 sites shown,4 are still operating under the same name.What has
been the TTA increase in 10 years??See top of file.
Note that 3 of 4 sites have a similar percentage increase over 10
years.Topsfield can thank the NH growers for the even greater increase.
5.How many of those 30 AGs,and which ones,have supplied genes to the 2003
top fruit?There are 3 that have made outstanding contributions to the
modern gene pool,and a small number of lesser ones.
Anyway,enough rambling for now.
I know that looking back is not of interest to everyone,but when the time
comes that your past is much longer than your future,history takes on a
whole new meaning.--Al Eaton
