Spring has sprung?
It is 85 degrees today in Central PA and the warm feeling is really great. In
around two weeks many will be starting their pumpkins for the year. The
"hopes and dreams" of the dedicated, possibly addicted, great pumpkin
growers. Each person is thinking this can be the year and it well might be. I
will be growing three plants this year rather than my usual two. My sites are
prepared and covered with plastic so that if it rains, and it will, my
fertilizers will not be washed away. I have upped the ante on each site by
adding lots of organic material and fertilizer. In each of my 10 foot
diameter sites excavated down 12 inches and mounded up 10 inches at the end,
I put in 30 pounds of 10-10-10, 10 pounds of calcium nitrate, 1 pound of
peters 10-52-10 water soluble for a phosphate kick and 450 pounds of
composted cow manure. This is what went in each of the three sites. I will be
starting my seeds in about one week and should have then out in the garden
the first week in May. The race is on.
I note some controversy within the group. Now is the time to dig and
rototill, not bash.
