Re: starting a new year

Shawn,
How much water will depend on your soil, but this year I'm going to try to get
4" a week during the peek...as I'm learning that TRANSPIRATION is the key and
the more "sucking from the roots for the evaporation"...the better at night
for the pumpkin to grow...so will move from 2" a week to double....we'll see
how it goes.
Good luck in 2011.

I am always experimenting with different methods for watering just because I
anted to see what worked best for me. I have used both drip nozzles (not
he T-Tape style) and soaker hoses. What I have gravitated to is using the
rip nozzles early and around the base of the plants and as the vines grow I
dd in the soaker hoses and follow the main and a few of the secondary vines
ith the soaker hose. I want to reduce the potential for fungal issues so
nless the temperatures are going to be hot I try to avoid using overhead
prinkler systems. If the weather is going to be hot make sure your pumpkin
s well watered to reduce the stress on the plant because it is difficult to
lay catch up if you are lacking moisture.
So that leads to a question I want to ask the forum. How well do you guys
eep your pumpkins watered?

I start out with them encircling my hill/mound in order to soak the roots of
he plant. As the vines grow, I do the best I can to train the vines and lay
he soaker hose to match. The remaining spots that get missed along the
ines are hand-watered. I also do the regular foliar feedings and above
round watering (sprinkler) early in the morning and during dry periods. If
remember correctly, you are in Illinois. We share the same potential for
ildew/fungi problems. My main reason for soakers is to put water to the
oots and not the leaves. We, of coarse, cannot control the rain but every
it helps!

Steve, when you used soaker hoses, did you run them down each and every
ine?

Jason,
am intrigued with the TTape. Does it install above or below the soil?
ripworks has it in some real affordable kits. My soaker hose works well but
t is cheap and needs replaced every couple of years. The tape looks a
ittle more sturdy.
hanks!

Debbie,
I've been using the drip tape from Dripworks based on some guidance from
att DeBacco at Team Pumpkin. It worked well last year. I don't know how it
ompares expense wise to other irrigation systems. I think it is a fairly
fficient way to get a lot of water spread out evenly, which is important if
our water is metered. However in a hot climate a separate fine-misting
ystem is needed. So for expense sake it might be better to go with a
prinkler system. If you go on BigPumpkins.com, Pete Mohr's diary from last
ear shows his sprinklers and Matt Debacco's shows the drip tape set up.
lso teamp-pumpkin.org shows drip tape setup.

The weather has been warming up a bit and I have been thinking about my
 patch.
I'm thinking about some sort of inexpensive irrigation system and was
 wondering
if anyone had thoughts or ideas.
