Steve, all,
I just wanted to mention that I respect your decision to plan for the worst and grow your own food. I've often though that it could come to this, and it's very worthwhile to be prepared. I would do the same, except that I have oodles of space, more than I need, and we already grow many things that we use year-round.
As for what's going to happen... I think one of two things will happen. Either we will continue down this path, overspending a few more years until we reach a breaking point and the dollar begins a hard crash and our economy goes into a severe tailspin... OR... The "China bubble" bursts, their economy tanks and this takes massive pressure off commodities. Commodity prices plummet, but a lot of other aspects of the economy need resetting as well. Keep in mind, this is purely speculation. (And, I suppose both can and will happen, not sure which happens first!)
For years now, China has been growing not by natural growth, but my command economy growth. They have built up to 64 million homes that sit empty, because they don't need them! (Stop and think about that... that's nearly enough homes to house all the people in the USA!) And so this "growth" has placed huge demands on lumber, copper, concrete, fuel (oil), etc., and when this bubble bursts they're not going to need to build anything for 20 years, or perhaps ever with their declining population.
So, the bottom line is we need to prepare for the worst. It could come in one form or another, but it could really come!
Cliff
