Rick,
I think this is a great idea for many of the same reasons as you. Here goes:
I am new to the world of giant pumpkins but an avid gardener for years. I
thought this would be a nice "fun crop" this year. I am in central NY right
on the border between zones 5-6 (mostly 5, but when I plant too early I like
to have an excuse). Being of Italian orign, garlic and tomatoes get priority
in my garden but also being a little eccentric I always try to grow
something unusual. I've done artichokes in the past with limited success.
I've been doing my homework on the PML lirking, reading, watching videos,
etc. My first cloche is up, and one of my early seeds just popping, a Ron
Wallace 567, as I'd like to have a pumpkin ready for the NY state fair. I am
ambitiously planning to build six more on my new plot for pumpkins (120x60)
and would really like to get a 500lber my first year out. I know that is
wishful thinking but better to have high goals.
I have access to plenty of manure and water. I expect time and wind to be my
major enemies as I live on a hill and usually get at least one bad early
fall storm. I like to be as organic as possible but am not adverse to using
chemicals when necessary. I am also planning to grow a variety of gourds
from seed sent to me by John Failor through the list.
I am looking forward to meeting many of the fine people on this list at the
Collins weigh off. Maybe I'll even win a booby prize. Well got to get
outside. I don't believe it but yes there are a few flurries...
Ciao, John
