Who's Out There

Re Rick's request:

Great idea - I'd like to know a little more about some of them also!

I'm Sue (alias 'The Pumpkin Lady'). My husband and I opened a pumpkin
patch/shop last year. We're really excited about this year. While we
didn't grow any giant pumpkins last year, we're going to try a few this
year - mostly for the attraction of customers. We have a couple of
acres of pumpkins where people can go out and pick their own. We also
have piles of pumpkins near the shop. We also raise sweet corn (earlier
in the season), indian corn, gourds, and popcorn. I have several
schools come out on field trips. This year we will plant very small
patches of cotton and peanuts - just for educational purposes for those
coming out for field trips. I'm going to put together a binder with
some of the interesting pictures (pumpkins, huge pumpkins, carved
pumpkins, the pumpkin boat pictures, etc) in the shop for people to
browse through. It may spark some interest.

I'm always looking for ideas on things to do on the entertainment side
of the pumpkin patch (last year we had pick your own, a pumpkin-dunkin
tank - for testing if your pumpkin will float (always) and for washing
your pumpkins, writing on the silo with sidewalk chalk, a corn maze, and
scarecrow stuffing). I want to do more this year, but just don't know
what. I'm also looking for facts about any of the above mentioned crops
that I can pass on to students (mainly preschool through 1st grade,
although last year one school brought out 3-5 grade classes).

I'd like to test the demand for dried gourds, but don't have any myself.
If anybody has any they'd like to get rid of, let me know. On the same
token, if anybody (nearby) has a Giant Pumpkin they want to get rid of
in late September/October, I may be interested.

I enjoy this subscriber mailing list of giant pumpkin growers. I'd like
to find a group of people who raise pumpkins more for the pumpkin patch
type thing.

That's about it!
