Re Rick's Request,
My name is Blair Capling and I live in Kitchener Ontario
Canada. I work for the Wellington County Board of Education as
their Environmental Issues Project Manager. For years I have grown
pumpkins in my backyard but I never really took care of them at all.
While on the Net, looking for a totally unrelated topic, I came
across an Atlantic Giant Pumpkin page and my interest was captured.
This will be my first year growing Atlantic Giants and I have high
hopes. (but not unrealistic!) I have secured some really excellent
seed and I am now deciding where I will be planting them. My
backyard is very small and doesn't get much sunlight. My girlfriend
lives on a dairy farm 10 minutes from my house and her father said I
could plant up to 5 plants on their land. I will be planting them in
different parts of the farm to see what works best. One plant will be
near a creek with the watertable about 24 inches below the surface.
Another two will be in their garden, and the last two are still undecided.
I was thinking that one over the septic-bed would not be a bad plan.? I
don't know if the plant near the creek will grow well, but the land is dry
there all summer, it gets lots of sunlight, and I know that water is
not far below the surface (If anyone has a comment on this choice, let
me know s.v.p.). I have tonnes of cow manure that I can use since I will be
planting on a dairy farm, and because I take care of composting for my
Board of Education, I have access to tonnes of compost.
Since this is my first Giant Pumpkin attempt, I don't expect much
more than 200 pounds, but anything above and beyond would be nice. I
am going to try and follow as much of the information that I have
read on the net as possible.
Good luck with your pumpkins and your request was a great idea.
