Hi All (again)
I already sent a response to 'Who's Out There,' but I sort of left out
my information about growing giant pumpkins. Last year, we planted our
pumpkin seeds with our planter (corn & bean planter). The giant
pumpkins were some generic seeds from the store - I think they were 'Big
Max.' They were too far down the field to water, etc. I'm embarrassed
to say this, but we got a whopping 65 pounder. This year, you guys have
given me pumpkin-itis. I've joined the St. Lawrence Growers group and
hope to get those seeds real soon. We also ordered some 'Atlantic
Giant' seeds - they're from a catalog, so I don't think they'll produce
anything humongous. I did nothing to prepare the soil last year, and
really don't even know where I'll plant them this year. I started off
thinking I'd take it lightly, planting, watching, and watering. Now
that I've got the pumpkin-itis, I'm really getting wound up. Gotta
plant where I can get the hose to. Wondering what I can use for a shade
this year (when do I start shading it?). . . . . . . .etc. . . . . . . .
So, since I've done nothing to prepare my soil, what should I do just
prior to planting the seeds? Okay, looking for the 10 top suggestions
for a 'NEWBIE' to get off to a good start.
Good luck to everybody. You are a great bunch of pumpkin-people.
Sue
P.S. Oh yea, I live in Illinois. Where Interstate 80 crosses the
Mississippi from Illinois to Iowa. Are any of you near this area?
