Massey and pumpkinguy
I was reading you conversation about pumpkin herbicide and felt I should
respond. I'm not sure if you talking about using herbicide on your giants
or just field pumpkins. I wouldn't risk it on my competition pumpkins, but
at the farm I grow jack-o-lantern size Howdens we use command. The new
formulation of Command: Command 3ME is a micro encapsulate formula. The
chemistry is way beyond me, but unlike the older Command 4EC it does not
have to be incorporated immediately. If you use it though the rates are a
little different than the 4EC. I've learned over the years the Command is
a rate and moisture sensitive chemical. Too high of a rate will stunt
pumpkins, but as long as your paying attention it will be OK. The chemical
also is water activated. In very dry years you don't get very much
control, but with a little bit of moisture it will give you real good
control- especially velvetleaf my worst nightmare.
What we do:
We apply and incorporate 1.58 Pts. Command 3ME per acre, later in the
season we cultivate with a tractor mounted cultivator. We are planted on
10' centers, and then right before the vines run (timing is critical) we
cultivate in between the rows with a 9' springloaded cultivator. They fill
in the middles then and shade out the weeds for the rest of the season.
This system workes very well for us.
Rick
