Howdy from Zone 5B, Kansas City area. We've had 2.3" of rain since
last evening, but it beats the snow that was falling the day before :-P
We would like to have some giant pumpkin this year, but are really
running out of garden space this year. Rather, we can have miscellaneous
veggies, OR an Atlantic Giant. But since I'm a trial variety tester for
Organic Gardening magazine, it's going to be ... miscellaneous veggies.
Maybe along the north side fence...? Not sure how much shade the row of
Osage Orange ["hedgeapple"] trees along the west/back side will throw.
Grew a Big Max several years ago, it was a good size for a B.M., around
100 pounds. Looked cute with the Jack-Be-Littles scattered around its base
on Halloween. But that was back at our previous house; we moved in December.
New yard's smaller, but doesn't flood. I didn't really want to try out my
own pumpkin boat, 'cause I don't own any canoeing oars...
I'm also the person in charge of the Olathe Horticulture Club's annual
Giant Pumpkin & Sunflower contest. I stepped into the meeting late, I was
wearing an orange sweater, and was also writing an article on A.G.s -- really
fell into that one!
The article in the KC Star should come out on the 18th; I'll let you
folks know the web address to read it.
