I signed up for the list last week, was busy and didn"t open my mail until
last night, suprise, suprise. I am interested in growing pumpkins. We have
two farms here in Southeast Georgia, with a very long growing season. The
soil is sandy loam with emphasis on the sand. I have some land that stays
reasonably moist most of the season and some that can get very dry. We grow
corn, soybeans, cotton, peanuts, wheat, rye and onions. I work full time
and currently have most of the 320 acres rented out. I am planning on
moving full time into vegetables in the next 5 to 6 years when I can retire
again (22 yrs in the Army). We live on 103 Acres near Statesboro and
Sylvania Georgia. I am interested in the length of growing time for the
Alantic Giant, temperatures that it thrives best in and especially any info
from Florida, Georgia or South Carolina growers. I also am looking for that
"Seed Source". I am planning on planting about 4 acres of commercial
pumpkins this year, something I have been threatening to do for a long while.
I planted onions this year in November, most are close to 3/4 lb now, they
are the Vidalia Sweet variety. I planted Silver Queen sweet corn on March
the 10th it is about 12" tall and ready for nitrogen this or next week. I
have tomotoes with blooms on them, snap beans up, pole beans up and potatoes
that we have been scratching at already. I will get some okra in the ground
tomorrow. I am originally from MD and loved the growing season on the
Eastern Shore around the Chesapeake Bay, but the winters and population
growth wore me out.
I look forward to hearing from "punkin grawers" as they here in GA...
