Rick & Mark,
You both asked about bubbling, this process was first described to me by
Pete Glasier. Over the course of the winter I have played around with the
concept.
Take 6 to 8 cups of water and place it in a beaker or upright container,
class jar is fine. Purchase a small fish pump from your local pet store and
small air stone that produces a fine stream of bubbles. Place the beaker of
water in a warm place, 70F is fine.
Take your seed and lightly file the edges using a Emory board, (finger nail
file). Do not sand the bottom of the seed (two small holes), just the sides
and over the crown of the seed.
Drop the seeds in the beaker of water with the bubbler, allow 8 to 12
hours.
Remove seeds and coat with fungicide(see web pages), I don't but it is
recommended!
Plant in appropriate starting mix, 1/3 Canadian sphagnum peatmoss, 1/3
perlite, 1/3 vermiculite works fine for me! Wet this with boiling water
before you place it in your pot, get it damp not soaking, that's all it
takes.
I like to keep them at 85F until they germinate, which is usually 52 to 56
hrs. Once the seed has broken ground squirt the seed coat with a spray
bottle to soften the outer shell, I pull it off when it is soft. Then back
the temp. down to about 75F or so. Turn on your fluorescent or grow lights.
I wait for the first true leaf to develop about 3 or 4 days to transplant.
Don't wait to long or the plant will become root bound.
Remember, all this is for really hard to start seed!
Normally I add 2 tbls. of water to a paper towel placed in a plastic baggie
and put the seed between the layers of damp, (not soaking wet) paper towel
for 12 hrs. Longer will not help germinate faster!
Also, if you are a burbs grower like I am and dealing with confined space,
it is important to know which way your plant is going to grow. The main
direction of the plant will grow in the opposite direction of the first
true leaf! Plus or minus 10 to 15 degrees.
Hope this Helps!
