It is a joyous time her in PA!
The seeds sprouted using the direct start method in a little less than a
week. They are in a 3 foot mound which has a 8-10" crater at the top (I
think it looks like a volcano). On top of the crater is a window to protect
from wind and help with heat generation.
My question is how long do you leave the heating cable energized? Clearly
it is to cold right now (days are in the 50-60's F, nights are 30-40's F).
The cable is advertized to maintain a constant 70 F temperature.
Any thoughts?

I leave them plugged in and they come on when the soil goes below 70, they
use very little electricity. I've had excellent results with germination
using the Direct Start Method, I added the heating cable to this method 8 or
10 years ago. To increase germination even more I freeze the seeds.
