My season has started out on a good note. My plan this year is to get
an earlier start using a heated cold frame. I am using one of Chris
Andersen's 977 seeds (Thanks Again Chris!!). The seed germinated in
only 48 hours at 27 degrees Celcius (around 80F). I use a "naked
germination" technique with the seed between moistened paper towels in a
small container. The seed is then transferred to potting soil in a peat
pot. In another 10 days I will transplant outdoors into the cold frame.
I realize this is an earlier start than most would suggest, but last
year I started on May 1st and by June 1st I had only 9 leaves on my
"vine". The previous year was even worse, and by the end of June my
vine was only 2.5 feet long.
I also got my first real soil test back yesterday. The report was
excellent and all they could really suggest was to increase my
phosphorus levels a bit.
I hope to have some new photos available on my web site by Sunday.
