Zoo,
Don't let a few articles get you down. Once in a while you will get a jerky
reporter that thinks pumpkin growing is a bizzare cultish hobby, but we know
better. They try to embellish a story, bring out anything bad they can find to
amuse their readers. There is one problem with writing a story that is
negative......most people love pumpkins.....the bigger they are, the more they
love them. 95% of the people that saw a big pumpkin wouldn't look at you and
say "Boy are you weird"....they might admire your gardening skills and ask how
you did it. Now if you are wearing and Orange tuxedo and floating around in a
pumpkin boat, you might have to take a few shots but the fun is worth it. When
an 80 year old lady comes up to you and says " this is the most fun I've had
in years, a guy is laughing so hard he has tears in his eyes or a young girl
stares in amazement......isn't it worth a shot or two from the jerks if you've
brightened up someones day or given a child a memory they will hold for the
rest of their life? Yes, there have been some rough times in the past.
Disputes , a few growers that wouldn't help out a fellow grower, etc. I know
of no other sport or hobby that has such a nice group of people willing to
share seeds and tips. So don't let a few jerks eat away at you. Look at all
the nice people on this list. There are very few rotten pumpkins in the
barrel. Now having said that, if you even think about sailing your pumpkin boat
on a course that interferes with my navigation, I'll fire a zuchini across
your bow, board your vessel and keelhaul your young butt using a sturdy
tertiary vine. Haarrrrrrr....shiver me timbers Capt. Pumpkin hasn't gone
totally soft yet.
