My method boiled down to acquiring various "sap meters" which claim to
detect motion of certain materials within the vine.  They weren't cheap,
however, and my attention shifted to a more immediate control problem:
keeping the leaves rigid without overwatering the soil.  So, I don't have
any answers here.  Didn't someone claim to have access to radioactive
tracers, and a willingness to try some water flow experiments?
