I thought I would give you all the final report on my midwinter compost
experiment - the one where I ran my house heat through a perforated 4"
sewer pipe buried under the compost pile....
Word is, it worked wonderfully! I dug it up yesterday and all the material
had turned into good looking, fresh smelling soil... right down to the
pumpkin glop which had been festering on the bottom before I inserted the
pipe. Total elapsed time: 2 weeks at 130 degrees F, another 2 weeks slowly
cooling down to 60, followed by several months of sitting fallow (and
maintaining that temperature) with no house heat applied. NOTE: I turned
the pile exactly once in that period ... the pipe trick was a great labor
saver.
To be on the safe side I'll use the bulk of the material next year - my
soil already has plenty of organics.
