Ron,
I don't know if cherry trees produce a harmful toxin but I do know
that some trees do. In my case, I was prepraring to move some dirt which had
some desired ph and minor nutrient characterisitics I was looking for. This
dirt happened to be near some trees as well. When I told my dad, he said he
had heard to be wary of walnut trees because they emitted a poison. At first
I responded just as you did, some old wives tale, this can't be true!! I said.
However, I researched it just in case my dad was right. I hate to admit it
but he was. The county extension agent said walnut trees produce a substance
known as juggalone( spelling may not be correct). This substance is very
toxic to plants like tomatoes and pumpkins. You might want to give your
county agent or a near by university w/ ag background a call to check about
cherry trees. It might just be ligitimate.
