While we are on the subject of # seeds in the fruit, it would be good to mention
Howard Dill's theory. That is that the fruit with thicker walls tend to have
fewer seeds. Anyone out there have data on this phenomenon? I have seen some
indications of this, and that smaller seeds have been in my thickest walled fruit
(946.5 Geerts descendants seem to be an exception to seed size rules).
Also, concerning why there are fewer seeds, it is due to two factors, one is the
# of available baby seeds inside that can receive pollen, the second is how much
pollen germinates and goes into the fruit uniting with the baby seed. There are
many things that effect these factors, and it is best to try increasing both. I
average 700-900 seeds per pumpkin regardless of weight, but have seen a range of
150 to 1000. Just some thoughts.
