Re: AG Pollen Storage

Brad,
Do you recall how many segments the female flower had? Each segment
corresponds to a seed cluster in the ovary. 4 segment has 4 clusters...5 has
5 clusters. I've never counted seeds in a 4, 5 and6 segment female to see if
seed counts vary with the number of segments. There doesn't seem to be any
strong evidence that the number of segments affects the eventual weight. We
have had big ones that are 4, 5, an6 segment females. If each segment or seed
cluster can contain a certain number of seeds, you would think that the
average 6 segment flower would have more seeds than a 4. If that is the case,
it would blow the theory of more seeds-bigger pumpkin....at least with the
Atlantic giant. I personally seeded Tim adams' pumpkin last year (828
pounds).....almost no good seeds in it....maybe 30 or40. I have seen 400
pounders with 700 seeds. My guess would be that you did a good job of
pollinating if you saw only a few flat white ovules.
