soil tilling

Was asked a question yesterday by a new grower concerning how many times to till his plot before planting, and what If any, are the negative effects to excessive tilling? My response was that I will till my plots 2-4 times before I get seeds in. I like to till immediatly in spring to break up soil, let sit for a few days and then add compost/ manure and whatever and till again, moisten, and then I'll till a few days before I plant. This has worked well in past with no negative effects on plants or soil as far as I can tell. Any thoughts on this from fellow growers?Pumpkinpiper (thinking of starting seeds tonight)
