moving earth

Talk about sore! With the help of large teenage boy and his even larger
father, I double-dug the entire backyard this last weekend. We tilled my
1,000 square foot patch to a depth of 24". It looks beautiful, and very
fertile.

I wonder if it is. Can anyone out there comment on the merits of
double-digging vs rototilling? It makes sense to me purely in terms of
supporting a big root mass, but organic gardeners often talk about soil
layers - loosening the top 12" to promote microbial action, and separately
loosening the bottom 12" (no mixing!) so that earthworms can liberate the
nutrients bound up in that packed earth.

Any thoughts?
