I am not up to date on optical microscopes of the 200 to 1000 X type.
I always discorage parents from buying microscopes for kids as toy
microscopes are not very useful. Good ones cost too much for the amount
of use an amateur gets out of them.
Many of the people on microscope@onelist.com are buying junk for a
couple hundred dollars and rebuilding them. It is possible. Some
colleges have auctions or warehouse open houses where I have found
useful scopes for $30 to $60, but only because I found junk which I
could fit together to make a complete microscope.
For the garden and greenhouse I use dissecting microscopes mostly. I
use mostly 7 X and 15X for two spotted mite eggs, other eggs, small
insects. It has 25X but 7X and 15X give a clearer view and this is a
superb quality AO American Optical dissecting scope.
A good $10 magnifying glass would do nearly as well. Don't overlook
the pocket microscopes sold at tool auctions and flea markets. Take some
leaves or specimens and try the 'scope before you buy.
