RE: height of stems advice needed

I, too, am using styrofoam to raise the vine. I have been cutting pieces of
1/2" foam sheathing into small blocks, and then using the pieces to build a
"tressel" that raises and lowers the vine on both sides of the pumpkin.
Using this method, you can add pieces as needed to take the pressure off of
the vine where it meets the pumpkin.

I have 2 pumpkins going full speed on my Thorson 837 plant. I did not do
this early enough on the first pumpkin, and there is a big pressure crack
where the vine meets the stem (also, I had to pull up some roots at the leaf
nodes near the pumpkin). For the second pumpkin, I began placing pieces of
foam under the leaf nodes long before they rooted, and have gradually raised
their height to meet the needs of the pumpkin. This method seems to work
great, and there are no signs of stress yet where the stem meets the vine.

By the way, the first pumpkin (pollinated on 6/24) was estimated at 337 lbs.
yesterday, even with the big crack where the stem meets the vine. The
second pumpkin (on a different primary vine) was estimated at 103 lbs.
yesterday (pollinated 7/8). Its growth is paralleling the first pumpkin's,
and I'm optimistic that the "styrofoam tressel" method will give it better
long term growth potential.

This year, I am raising the vine near the strem using foam blocks.
I'm doing this now while the fruit is small and the vine is more pliable
and less established.

My question is, how high should I raise it?
