Little flying things

Does anyone know about the little black flying things, about the size of
ants, that come out about this time each year. They infest male flowers, but
do not seem to actually eat the plant. Maybe they gobble pollen.
Just curious.

I have named the prize pumpkin, as seems to be customary among those of us
with small crops and big ideas. One half of it is raised up much higher than
the other hemisphere, so we are calling it Quasimodo. If it splits or does
other bad things, I will then call it a stupid piece of protoplasm and a
cause of grief among my clan. But hopefully Quaz won't do that.
