Hal:

You didn't mention where your patch is. When did you plant to get fruit 
ripening now? Sounds like you're in a southern latitude. Heat can bolt fruit 
and cause premature ripening.

If your pumpkins are indeed ripe now, you'll have a challenge trying to keep 
them until Oct. holidays. Pick them from the vine and take care not to bruise 
the fruits. Wash them down with a solution of bleach and water. Wipe dry and 
place on styro or cardboard in a cool, dry place. A walk in cooler is not 
good because of the high humidity. 

I had an immature fruit last 2 1/2 months in my family room on a ceramic tile 
floor with the air conditioning in my home set at 68 F. The seeds and flesh 
were good, although some of the seeds had sprouted. Why did I pick an 
immature fruit?....my vine rotted and I was forced to.
